Message from Your New President
Dear AWP Members:
As your incoming President, I would first like to thank you for the opportunity to serve you. I also want to welcome the new members of our Executive Council! Dr. Helen Egger is our Secretary Elect and Drs. Stacy Drury and Dr. Nathalie Marie our new Councilors at Large and thank all returning officers. We had a very successful meeting in San Francisco and are in the process of initiating many new projects to better serve you going forward. Here is a sampling of some of the exciting initiatives on the horizon with more details to follow through the coming year.
- AWP -Sponsored breakfast workshop at annual meeting on Negotiation and Advocacy Skills for Women Psychiatrists in various practice settings- private practice, academia, research, etc. Top women psychiatry leaders in these different arenas will be available to offer insight and mentorship.
- Your new executive committee has organized itself into various AWP committees to have more activity and member-input throughout the year. These include
- Membership Committee- to help recruit and retain our members and look into starting more local AWP chapters.
- Program Committee- to help us have more presentations for women by women at national meetings and also to make these presentations available to our paid members who cannot attend all the meetings.
- International Committee- to help strengthen our international outreach to members and potential members from around the work and to promote fellowship opportunities for our colleagues from around the world.
- Website Committee- to continue to re-organize our new website and to have a more timely posting of newsworthy items, award, and accomplishments of our members.
- Newsletter Committee- to continue the transition of our newsletter to an electronic format and to diversify our content.
- Finance Committee- to diversify the funding sources for our various award programs.
- Awards Committee- to streamline our selection process for our various awards to oustanding women and a few good men.
- Long-range Planning Committee- to continue to define the mission and direction of the AWP and strengthen our liaisons with other key groups within the APA and from the outside.
I would like to invite all of you to participate in these committees by contacting me at szigethye@upmc.edu> so that I can get you linked by email to the head of the appropriate committee.
Lastly, to introduce myself: I am a psychiatrist at the University of Pittsburgh where I run a Medical Coping Clinic at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh for children and adolescents seen in the Division of Gastroenterology. With federal research funding, I study depression and its treatment in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. I also have a private practice for adults which focuses on identifying stress and using a multimodal approach to teach stress management. My main hobby for the past 26 plus years remains competitive rowing.
We are all strong women and together we can thrive in our profession and our personal lives. To continue the strong direction started by our immediate past President, Dr. Tana Grady-Weliky, Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Eduction at the University of Oregon, AWP is where our Work meets our Lives! Please also pay your dues as the infrastructure of our organization to achieve the goals above is dependent on each and every one of you.
Sincerely,
Eva Szigethy MD PhD
