The Association of Women Psychiatrists gives the following awards: 

Marian I. Butterfield, M.D., M.P.H.
Early Career Psychiatrist Award/Lecture

The Marian I. Butterfield, M.D. Early Career Psychiatrist Award was established in the year 2002 to recognize women psychiatrists who have established significant professional careers early in their professional development. The award was established to honor Doctor Marian Butterfield who, early in her career, had already served as President of the Association of Women Psychiatrists and had made significant contributions to research in the area of post traumatic stress disorder in women, particularly, women veterans. Furthermore, Doctor Butterfield had also conducted other research in the areas of womens' mental health, had held many leadership positions in the American Psychiatric Association and had chaired committees related to women's' mental health in the American Medical Women's Association.

Jeanne Spurlock, M.D. Social Justice Award

The AWP Jeanne Spurlock, M.D. Social Justice Award was established in 2008 to honor her lifetime of extraordinary dedication to and creative leadership efforts in the person and professional development of women and minorities. Doctor Spurlock served as a mentor to hundreds of psychiatrists in her roles as chair of the Department of Psychiatry at Meharry Medical College and as Deputy Medical Director of the American Psychiatric Association. As a child psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, she also worked tirelessly to improve the health and mental health of children and adolescents. Doctor Spurlock not only acted on her beliefs to serve those who were neither respected nor treated fairly in local, regional or global communities, but also strived to help the disenfranchised in their personal lives. This award will honor a psychiatrist who has, in similar acts, worked toward social justice for others who have been similarly disrespected and mistreated.

Leah J. Dickstein, M.D., M.A.
Medical Student Award

The Leah J. Dickstein, M.D. Medical Student Award was established in the year 1992 to recognize a female medical student who best exemplifies the spirit of creativity, energy, and leadership that Doctor Dickstein herself epitomizes and seeks to foster in others.

Alexandra Symonds, M.D. Award Lecture

The Alexandra Symonds, M.D. Award Lecture was established in the year 1998 by the Association of Women Psychiatrists with the American Psychiatric Association as the first APA award lecture named for a woman. This award, is given annually to a woman psychiatrist who has distinguished herself in fostering the advancement of women's mental health in the fields of clinical services, research, and/or education. This award is named for Alexandra Symonds, M.D., founder of AWP, who devoted her whole professional life to further appropriate treatment for women patients and equitable opportunities for psychiatrists.

Alexandra Symonds, M.D. Distinguished Service Award

The Alexandra Symonds Distinguished Service Award is given to an AWP Member who has given tirelessly in her efforts to the Association, shown extraordinary leadership in mentoring women and exhibiting professional dedication as exhibited by our founder, Alexandra Symonds, M.D.

Alexandra and Martin Symonds Foundation Fellowship

The Alexandra and Martin Symonds Foundation awards two Fellowships each year, through the Association of Women Psychiatrists, to outstanding women residents/fellows interested in advancing women's mental health in the fields of clinical services, research and/or education.

AWP Fellowship

The Fellowship is offered each year to two outstanding women psychiatry residents who have demonstrated leadership and a contribution to women's health. The Fellowship is designed in keeping with AWP goals of developing leadership in women psychiatrists as well as contributing to the overall mission of improving the personal and professional future roles of women. Two candidates are selected based on a demonstrated leadership potential, interest in and commitment to women's health and academic excellence and community mental health service.

Martin Symonds, M.D.
Man of Good Conscience Award

"The Martin Symonds, M.D. Man of Good Conscience Award," was established in the year 2000 to honor men who met the criteria of being a "Man of Good Conscience". This term was created by Leah J. Dickstein, M.D. in 1991 to identify and honor men with professional power who used their power fairly to nationally interact with, assist, and recommend competent and willing women for leadership roles and other professional opportunities. It was named after Martin Symonds, M.D., who personified throughout his personal and professional life the letter and spirit of this award. Doctor Martin Symonds served as the Chief Psychiatrist in New York City, treating officers involved in domestic violence, served as an international expert on terrorism, and made time to volunteer at Westchester orphanages.

Ellen Violett International Fellowship

This Fellowship is given to an international AWP member who has distinguished herself in her country for her work with women patients. The Fellowship consists of attending that year's APA Annual Meeting and present her work at an appropriate forum organized by AWP.
